Photopharmica was formed in 2002 to commercialise the intellectual property generated by the University of Leeds Centre for Photobiology and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). The company's strategy is to discover and acquire novel photosensitisers that have potential for treating disease and particularly infection and to progress these through Phase II trials. Later clinical development, regulatory approval and marketing will be achieved by licensing or co-development agreements with appropriate partners. In July 2007, the company announced the successful conclusion of the first ever Phase II Placebo controlled clinical trial using topical photodynamic therapy for reducing the bacterial load of chronic leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers.
WRTSF has been supporting Photopharmica since 2002.
